New Year reflections: 11 questions to ask yourself

Words by Carlie Barlow, health & wellbeing coach

Starting a new year brings a natural inclination to reflect. It’s a time to look back at the paths we’ve travelled, acknowledge our triumphs and setbacks, and, ultimately, chart a course for the future.

This isn’t just about ticking off accomplishments; it’s about understanding our journey, celebrating our growth and identifying areas for improvement.

Why make time for reflection?

Reflection is more than just reminiscing. It’s a powerful tool that can:

  • Increase self-awareness: By analysing our experiences, we gain deeper insights into our strengths, weaknesses, values and motivations.
  • Boost motivation: Acknowledging our successes fuels our confidence and provides the momentum to tackle new challenges.
  • Foster gratitude: Reflecting on positive experiences helps us appreciate the good in our lives and cultivate a sense of contentment.
  • Identify areas for growth: Recognising our shortcomings allows us to pinpoint areas where we can improve and develop new skills.
  • Reduce stress: Taking time to process the past can help us release pent-up emotions and alleviate stress.

How to reflect effectively

Choose a dedicated time and space. Find a quiet place where you can focus without distractions. You might even want to set a timer; just 15-20 minutes of dedicated reflection can be incredibly valuable.

Journalling can be a good way of reflecting. Simply write down your thoughts, feelings and experiences. This could include:

Listing accomplishments: What are you proud of achieving last year?
Acknowledging challenges: What obstacles did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Identifying key learnings: What important lessons did you learn throughout the year?
Expressing gratitude: What are you grateful for from last year?
Setting intentions: What do you hope to achieve this year?

If you’re struggling to focus, mindful reflection could help. Engage in quiet contemplation, perhaps through meditation or deep breathing exercises.

Visual aids can also be useful. Create a vision board, mood board, or timeline to visually represent your journey and goals.

Reflection questions and prompts

  • What were the highlights of last year?
  • What were the low points?
  • Did you achieve any of your personal or professional goals? If not, why?
  • What were your biggest challenges, and how did you handle them?
  • What skills did you develop last year?
  • What are you proud of yourself for?
  • What are you grateful for in your life?
  • What do you want to let go of from last year?
  • What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
  • What are your top three priorities for this year?
  • What steps can you take to achieve your goals?

Turning reflection into action

Reflection is not just about looking back; it’s about using the insights gained to move forward. Consider these action steps:

  • Set SMART goals: Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals for the coming year.
  • Create an action plan: Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps.
  • Develop new habits: Incorporate new routines and practices that support your goals.
  • Seek support: Connect with mentors, coaches, or friends who can offer guidance and encouragement.
  • Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments along the way.

The importance of self-compassion

It’s crucial to approach reflection with self-compassion. Avoid dwelling on negative experiences or beating yourself up for not achieving everything you set out to do last year.

Remember that growth is a journey, not a destination. Celebrate your progress, learn from your mistakes and move forward with renewed purpose.

Beyond individual reflection

Reflection can also be a valuable exercise for teams and organisations. By collectively reviewing the past year, teams can identify areas for improvement, strengthen their relationships and align their efforts towards shared goals.

In conclusion

Reflection is a powerful practice that can bring clarity, purpose and a renewed sense of direction to your life. By taking the time to honestly assess your experiences, acknowledge your growth and set meaningful intentions for the future, you can create a foundation for a fulfilling and successful year ahead.

So, take a moment to pause, reflect and discover the wisdom that lies within your journey.
