Your best family summer ever: Prioritising play, joy and connection

Words by Carlie Barlow, wellbeing expert

For families, summertime can be an opportunity to reconnect, create lasting memories and build stronger bonds. After all, it’s the traditional time for holidays, and for a looser, more laidback approach to life. Summer is synonymous with relaxation, adventure and quality time – in an ideal world, at least.

In our real, fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in schedules and responsibilities, and let the summer slip by. That’s why prioritising play, joy and connection is a must-try. Let’s explore some ideas to help you make the most of this precious time together as a family.

1. Unplug and engage

One of the biggest challenges to family bonding is the constant distraction of technology. To truly connect, consider a summer digital detox, or at least designated screen-free times.

It’ll also help if you can spend time together doing activities that encourage face-to-face interaction and conversation – and don’t involve screen use. Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and biking offer opportunities to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourselves in nature’s beauty. If the weather isn’t playing ball, board games, puzzles and card games can all spark laughter and friendly competition.

2. Embrace spontaneity

Summer is the perfect time to let go of rigid schedules and embrace spontaneity. Surprise your family with a picnic in the park, a visit to a local museum, or a water balloon fight in the back garden. Spontaneous activities create excitement, fostering a sense of adventure and fun. Don’t be afraid to deviate from your plans and follow your family’s interests on any given day.

3. Create shared experiences

Shared experiences are the glue that binds families together. Whether it’s attending a local festival, volunteering for a community project or taking a family day trip, these shared adventures create lasting memories. Talk about your experiences, share your feelings and learn from each other. These conversations can deepen your connections and strengthen your family bonds.

4. Prioritise outdoor play

Spending time outdoors in nature is essential for physical and mental wellbeing. Engage in activities that encourage movement and exploration, whether that’s a scavenger hunt or football in the park.

Outdoor play not only promotes physical activity but also provides opportunities for creativity, problem-solving and social interaction.

5. Cultivate gratitude and appreciation

Taking time to express gratitude and appreciation for each other can significantly enhance family relationships. Make it a habit to share what you’re thankful for during meals or before bedtime. Acknowledge each other’s efforts, celebrate successes and offer support during challenging times. Creating a culture of gratitude fosters a positive and loving environment.

6. Embrace the little moments

It’s often the small, everyday moments that create the most significant impact. Enjoy simple pleasures like reading together, having breakfast as a family, or taking a walk. These seemingly insignificant moments can be filled with laughter and connection. Cherish these precious times and create a lasting legacy of love and togetherness.

Remember, the goal is not to create a perfect summer, but to create a memorable one. By prioritising play, joy and connection, you can build a strong foundation for your family that will last a lifetime.
