We all know about the importance of cardio. It’s the type of exercise that strengthens heart and lungs, as well as bringing mood-boosting benefits. Dance fitness classes are one of the most fun ways to get your all-important cardio fix.
Dance exercise is particularly good for anyone who doesn’t like the sensation of being out of breath. You’ll be too busy following the moves to focus on that breathless feeling, which means you’ll get fitter without really noticing the effort.
Dance exercise classes are different from dance lessons – the emphasis is on fitness rather than perfect form. That being said, depending on the type you choose, you may well learn a few moves from the instructors.
We’ll explain the main type of dance fitness class for adults, and how to get started as a beginner. Expect music, movement and plenty of motivation!
How to get started with dance fitness
Once you’ve chosen your style of dance exercise class – we’ve rounded them up below – there are a few things you can do to enhance your enjoyment.
Choose a comfortable outfit
As you’ve probably guessed, there’s no need for elaborate costumes – or costumes of any kind! – in a dance fitness class. Choose what you’d normally wear for a cardio session or to the gym, including comfortable, supportive trainers.
Start slow
Tell the instructor you’re new to the class, and make sure you choose a position in the studio where you can easily see them demonstrating the moves. You don’t have to go all in at your first dance fitness class, particularly if you’re new or returning to exercise. Take it at your own pace, and allow your strength and endurance to grow over time.
Increase your sessions
We suggest starting with one dance fitness class per week. As you get into your groove, increase the frequency to two-three weekly sessions for a further fitness boost.
Bring a friend
There are many benefits to working out with our nearest and dearest – not least that it helps with confidence. If you’d like to try dance fitness but need some reassurance, see if a friend or relative will join you, at least for the first session.
Be patient
It takes some people a good few sessions to pick up dance moves and routines – and that’s fine. Nobody is expecting you to be leaping round like a pro in week one. Show up consistently and eventually you’ll get it; trust yourself.
Types of dance fitness class
Zumba®
Get your sweat on with this Latin-inspired dance fitness class. No prior dance experience is required – just turn up and enjoy yourself with the easy-to-follow routines. We offer Zumba® classes at many David Lloyd Clubs.
Barre
Ok, so this isn’t technically a dance class, but barre is a ballet-inspired workout, which means you’ll get to experience the moves ballerinas use to train for their routines. Typically, a barre class involves lots of repetitions of very small movements. It may sound easy – in fact, it’s a powerful workout that’s great for toning muscles. Dance Fitness
This is a much loved class that you’ll find at many David Lloyd clubs. You’ll get a real cardio workout with Dance Fitness, but you’ll barely register your raised heart rate because you’ll be having so much fun! Inspiring instructors will lead you through moves from popular dance styles including salsa and cha cha cha.
Dance flow classes
This is a mind-body approach to dance classes. There’s won’t be any strict choreography – it’s more like a moving meditation, as you get lost in the music and give your mind a break from everyday thoughts.
Virtual cardio dance
Feel self-conscious about dancing in front of others? Trust us, no one in a dance class will be judging you – they’re too busy thinking about their own steps. But if you’d like to build your confidence at home before trying an in-person session, there are plenty of classes online. Many dance class videos are themed by decade (noughties hits, anyone?) or artist, so you’re sure to find something that suits your musical tastes.
Our members can enjoy a huge range of virtual classes on the David Lloyd Clubs app – including dance sessions. Members can also use the app to book in-person classes, set personal goals, and order food and drink in the clubs. Want to learn more about becoming a member? Start by finding your nearest club.
