The outdoors can be one of the best places to relax and unwind. With fresh air and natural sunlight, it can be exactly what you need.

Here are just a few reasons why you should consider some outdoor relaxation.

Being outdoors provides your daily dose of vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for a well-functioning body.  It helps us to absorb calcium, prevent osteoporosis and reduce inflammation.  Although we can get vitamin D from certain foods we eat, 90% of it is from casual exposure to sunlight. Whenever possible, try to get at least 10-15 minutes of time in the sun as, not only will this increase your vitamin D, but can lead to an enhanced mood and energy.

It can help improve your mental health

Spending time outside with nature has been found to help both mental and physical health problems including anxiety and depression.  Research has shown that spending just 20-30 minutes outside every day can significantly reduce your stress levels.

Better sleep

Getting outdoors and exposing yourself to sunlight can ‘reset’ your circadian rhythm (internal body clock) and enable a more natural sleep pattern.

The outdoors provides you with free aromatherapy

Research shows that natural scents like flowers and freshly cut grass can make you feel calmer and more relaxed. Being outdoors gives you the opportunity to switch off for a while and enjoy those things around you that we sometimes take for granted.

You don’t have to completely change your lifestyle to enjoy some of the fantastic benefits of spending some time outdoors. We’ve included a few tips below on how you can spend less time inside:

– Take a walk on your lunch break or enjoy lunch outside
– Enjoy a game of tennis on an outdoor court at your local David Lloyd Club
