When it comes to exercise, there are a number of different types of training that work the body in diverse ways to keep you physically fit and healthy. Training may generally be broken down into flexibility, strength, aerobic and circuit. Specific goals, personal preference, and health and lifestyle requirements will influence the type of training you choose to do. For example, a mature person looking to maintain good bone strength, stay mobile, and prevent falls and breaks, would incorporate both strength and flexibility training into their routine; while a youngster aiming to run a half-marathon might combine circuit and aerobic training to build fitness and endurance.
Group exercise classes often concentrate on one or two different forms of training and are a great way to focus your exercise and achieve your goals as you work under the guidance of a qualified expert.
Discover which classes at David Lloyd Clubs are best for each type of training:
Flexibility training
Flexibility training is one of the most important types of fitness training as it provides a foundation for all other exercise types. Stretching reduces your risk of injury, improves your flexibility and range of motion, and serves as a solid warm-up for more energetic exercise. Flexibility exercises are also an excellent way to improve your posture and breathing, helping to improve balance and reduce stress.
Flexibility-focused classes at David Lloyd Clubs:
Yoga – These classes include physical poses or ‘asanas’, breathing techniques and meditation. Not only will they increase your flexibility but boost your immune system and encourage relaxation.
Pilates – This is a highly effective exercise class that will improve posture and flexibility while helping to prevent injury. Movements are slow and measured to create lean and strong muscles.
SPIRIT – SPIRIT combines elements of yoga, Pilates and meditation to provide an energising, yet calming workout. Set to subtly motivating music, each session journeys through exercises and postures, before ending with a relaxing period of meditation.
Simply Stretch – Designed to simply lengthen the body, these classes will increase flexibility and mobility.
Strength training
Strengthening your muscles not only makes you stronger, but also stimulates bone growth, lowers blood sugar, assists with weight control, improves balance and posture, and reduces stress and pain in the lower back and joints.
Strength-focused classes at David Lloyd Clubs:
BODYPUMP(™) – Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP™ gives you a total body workout while burning loads of calories.
Legs, Bums and Tums – Targeting the legs, bum and abdominals, this workout incorporates the use of hand weights, bars, bands and other equipment.
Core Stability – These classes specifically target the abdominals, pelvis, lower back and diaphragm, using body-weight, weights and other equipment.
Aerobic/cardio training
Aerobic training (also referred to as cardio training) strengthens your cardiovascular system by increasing your heart rate and breathing. These exercises use large muscle groups to sustain exercise for a prolonged period of time (over 15 minutes), where your heart rate is maintained at between 60 percent to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. Examples of aerobic exercise include fast walking, jogging, running, stair steppers, elliptical, adult swimming lessons, step class, and other cardio-based exercises.
This training style is good for those who want to lose weight, are looking to increase performance and endurance, are trying to reduce the risk of chronic illness like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, or training for an endurance competition such as a marathon.

Circuit training
Circuit training combines strength-training with aerobic exercise. This type of exercise usually involves a mix of cardio activity such as running or rowing, and a number of strength-building exercises using body-weight and dumbbells/barbells/TRX and more. Typically, you’ll move between individual stations where you’ll perform different flexibility, dynamic strength training and static strength training exercises.
The circuit training method of exercise is good for those people who are looking to lose weight, maximise their time, or are looking for a total-body workout.
