Ways to still enjoy Christmas this year

This holiday season isn’t quite like other years, to say the least. Due to restrictions to help stop the spread of COVID-19, everything from shopping for gifts to holiday events looks a lot different. We have all worked hard to adapt to our new normal, but it’s okay to be disappointed that you won’t be able to participate in your usual holiday traditions this year. But different doesn’t have to be a bad thing. We still have a lot to be grateful for—here are a few reasons to look forward to Christmas this year.

A break from the hustle

No matter what industry you work in, 2020 has been full of ups, downs and uncertainty about the future and it might feel like you haven’t had a chance to relax. Christmas and the end of the year in general is the perfect time to take a breather from the hustle. 

If social obligations around the holidays have always been a source of stress for you, this year you’ll be able to take some time for yourself guilt-free. Now is your chance to dedicate some time to your hobbies, try a new workout class you’ve had on your list for months (even if it’s virtual), catch up on sleep and recharge for the year ahead. If a little rest and relaxation leaves you feeling motivated, you could also get a head start on your fitness goals. Why wait until the new year?

The Christmas music

There may not be any laws against playing Christmas music all-year round but there’s something to be said for listening to your favourite renditions of Winter Wonderland and Silent Night sparingly. But the wait is over—you can officially feel free to cue up your Christmas playlist and get into the holiday spirit!

All the food

Even if you won’t be sitting down to a huge family feast, the holidays still come with plenty of delicious food. Maybe this can be the first year you make a turkey dinner without a parent’s help. Not to mention, all the turkey leftovers are perfect for a hearty soup or you can get creative with a turkey curry recipe.

Food also has a way of bringing people together from afar. Try out a new shortbread recipe for example and document it on social media to spark conversations and share your best baking tips.

Holiday-themed virtual events

We’re no strangers to the Zoom happy hours, virtual workouts and online get-togethers that have made up our social lives this past year. Even if you’ve felt a little burnt out on screen time, Christmas has a way of re-igniting your need to socialise —and now you have a good reason!

Make the holidays an excuse to check in and reconnect with your family and friends from all over the world.
